How it works
What filing looks like, one step at a time
Here's what happens, in the order it happens. You can stop after any step.
- 01
Step 1: Call, text or send the form
Tell me a little about what's going on. I'll call back the same or next business day to set a time.
- 02
Step 2: A free first talk
About thirty minutes, by phone or in person. We go over what you owe, what you earn and what you want to keep.
- 03
Step 3: A written plan and a written fee
I send you which chapter fits, what you'd keep, what it costs and how payment works. You take as long as you need.
- 04
Step 4: Paperwork, together
You gather pay stubs, tax returns and bills; I turn them into the forms and check every line with you before filing.
- 05
Step 5: Filing day
The case is filed online. From that moment, collection calls, lawsuits and most garnishments have to stop.
- 06
Step 6: The trustee meeting
About a month later, a short meeting, often by video. I prepare you beforehand and sit with you through it.
- 07
Step 7: Discharge
For Chapter 7, about four months after filing. For Chapter 13, when the plan is finished. Then the debts are gone.
Before the first talk
Do I need to have all my papers ready?
No. A rough list is enough for the first talk. We gather the rest together afterward.
Can my spouse come?
Yes, and it often helps if the debts are shared. Bring anyone who makes you feel steadier.
What if bankruptcy isn't right for me?
Then I'll say so, and point you toward what might be, like a payment plan with a creditor or a credit counseling agency.
Ready when you are, not before
Call, text or send the form. I'll take it from there.
